Cultural Promotions of the George Town Festival From 2010-2020 in Regard to the Multi-Ethnic Muslim Community in Unesco Gtwhs Penang, Malaysia

Purpose: The objective of this research was to explore the patterns of the George Town Festival’s cultural promotions regarding the multi-ethnic communities at the UNESCO George Town World Heritage Site, Penang.
Theoretical framework: There has been much debate regarding the lack of local participation in the George Town Festival, in particular that the Muslim community is not properly represented and representation of the GTF has become ‘too Chinese’. Hence, it is vital to explore the cultural promotions of the George Town Festival vis-à-vis multi-ethnic communities at the UNESCO George Town, Penang.
Design/methodology/approach: I analysed the cultural promotions of the GTF, based on GTF e-booklets from 2010 to 2020.
Findings: The findings showed that the cultural promotions of the GTF from 2010-2020 are more beneficial to the Chinese community, whereas the Muslim community in Penang is underrepresented.
Research, Practical & Social implications: I suggest future research to continuously analyse the cultural promotions of GTF and other cultural events and festivals vis-à-vis multi-ethnic communities in UNESCO George Town World Heritage Site.
Originality/value: The findings showed that very a few articles exclusively focused on the cultural promotions of GTF vis-à-vis multi-ethnic communities in UNESCO Penang. It is therefore crucial to conduct this research in order to fill the prevailing gaps in the literature.
