Objective of the study: This study aims to conduct a study on precarious housing in the central region of São Paulo focusing on tenements in order to identify the most relevant aspects to select a house, from the perspective of residents.
Methodology/approach: The methodology used was descriptive, presenting an objective research, consisting of field research. The research was applied in the central region of São Paulo in three neighborhoods with precarious residences, with 101 people being interviewed.
Main results: The research shows that the location of housing, from the perspective of the residents, is the most relevant factor, since many cannot afford transportation and there are also residents who, due to work, cannot leave minors home alone.
Theoretical/methodological contributions: It is known that housing location is one of the factors that make individuals live in these places, in addition to other personal factors. However, the inhabitants consider it important to be close to the elements they use the most, especially work and school.
Relevance/originality: There are two aspects that stand out in this research, the first is the fact of directly researching the people who are the target audience for social housing plans. The second is that it demonstrates that location is fundamental for residents in housing policies.
Contributions: Research can help managers understand the most relevant factors for low-income people to select their housing and also helps to raise public awareness about the fact that location is one of the main aspects to considered, especially for the low-income population of the city of São Paulo.
